Hey Gang,
With temps. in the high 40's all weekend into Monday all Snowgang trails are "ride at your own risk" at this time. Our base has held up well for the most part, but trails with major traffic are down to dirt as of this writing. All local traffic can still get around a little bit because you know where the problem areas are, but if you are from "away" please check with locals before you do any trail riding at all. With all this being said, my report is as follows::
ITS# 83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- No grooming , may be passable if you are an experienced rider!
Municipal Trail #70 Benedicta/Whetstone Falls-- Not groomed, with low snow. Have 2 plowed roads.
ITS # 81-- Sherman/Benedicta. Mattawakeag Cuttoff -- has been groomed recently -- have low snow in areas but I believe you can get a ride in here.
*********** Snowgang club trails have held up so far with few wetholes. Drivers can get from Sherman to Plunkett Pond with no prob. at this time. Remember that the VFW fishing derby is still on for Sat. the 13th. $2000 dollars in prizes --- be there!! With all that being said, please contact your "locals" as they can tell you if there are any problem areas for the derby. In speaking with these folks over the weekend I am told there is 2' of ice in place -- enjoy!!!
** Club trails have real good conditions as I write. Please use your heads out there -- SLOW DOWN!!

P.S -- If you hit one of our 4 legged buddies out there, trust me, IT WILL RUIN YOUR WHOLE DAY!!!

Hey Gang,
With some cooler temps. in place, the decision has been made to get at least our ITS trail system back on line. We have had several inches of new snow over the last couple of nights and we will start actively groomer as of 3-2-10. We will concentrate on ITS trails only at this time as they will have the heavyist traffic. My trail report is as follows::::
ITS#83 --- Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- Grooming will be done from Kelly's Shell Station to the Bushey Field only. There will be a 3-4 mile strech that will be"ride at your own risk" until you get to the intersection of 85/83. Grooming from there to Whetstone will be picked up by our sister club Rockebema Snow Rangers (Patten). Many thanks to Trailmaster Steve Crouse and his crew for their help, as we cannot get through our "4 mile swamp"
due to water issues.
ITS# 81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- Will be groomed asap from Kelly Shell to at least the plowed road approx. 5 miles S. of Benedicta . If conditions allow we will groom the roadside to the Mattawamkeag Cuttoff. Please follow all signs closely!
Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- This trail is "ride at your own risk" at this time.If groomed, grooming will stop just after Mud Brook Bridge, as there are 3 miles of Winter road in place. I will let riders know if,and when, conditions change.
Ride safe & to the right,
Jim Splan
Reporter@ Large
P.S -- Moose, deer, and turkeys using ALL trails-- SLOW DOWN!!
P.SS -- Spring riding conditions in place. All trails will have icey conditons at this time -SLOW DOWN!!
P.SSS -- Check with locals before going onto any lake or pond --ICE IS NOT SAFE!!
2/26/2010
Hey Gang
Both Snowgang tractor/groomers are PARKED as of 02-25-10. All trails will be "ride at your our risk" at his time. What a season!!
2/23/2010
Hey Gang,
With temps. in the 40's today, our trails are taking a hit again. It rained hard in several spots on my trip home from Millinocket this afternoon. The old Mountian (Katahdin) is raising Hell with the Snowgang trail system. With a rain/snow mix coming over the next couple of days, we will only lose snowpack. With this being said, my trail report is as follows:::
ITS# 83 --- Sherman/Whetstone -- has been groomed from the S. by E. Branch Sno Rovers from Whetstone Falls to Trail #70 intersection. Groomer operator John Oxley (yes he belongs to more than one club) told me that there is some snow but it is going fast!! Riders need to SLOW DOWN as "ice conditions" will exist. Also low snow conditions will allow rocks, stumps, ect. to come onto the trail -- be on the lookout!!
ITS #81 -- Sherman/Bendicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- not groomed at this time due to low snow conditions. Riders need to be aware that fields will have a lot of bare spots. Pick your way around them and you can get from A-Z!
Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- riders MAY be able to use this trail after the 3" on new snow we got on Sunday??? Be aware that there is a 3 mile Winter starting after Mud Brook bridge W. of route #11.
**** All Snowgang club trails are "ride at your own risk" at this time!!

P.S -- 2 and 4 legged animals using ALL trails -- SLOW DOWN!!
P,S. -- WE NEED A SNOWDANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2/19/2010
Hey Gang,
All Snowgang trails are groomed at this time BUT --- here we go!! With temps. supposed to be in the mid/high 40's over the next three days all trails will have issues as far as snow cover goes. I will address each trail one bu one:::
ITS# 83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- groomed with fair/good conditions. This trail has had MAJOR traffic over the school vaca. and has lost a lot of snowpack. Have it good authority that E. Branch Sno Rovers groomer will be going to 83/85 intersection tonight. With minimal snow, drivers should be looking for objects in the trail (rocks, stumps ect.) being brought to the top by the groomer.
ITS# 81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- groomed, with good conditions. The fields may be a little boney, and drivers may have to pick their way around in spots. We aware of a plowed road approx. 5 miles S. of Benedicta. Signs are in place -- pay attention to them!!
Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- NOT GROOMED at this time due to low snow conditions.Drivers MAY be able to get through on this trail with the 1-2" of new powder of Thursday.Snowsnakes in place!!
All snowgang club trails are listed as "ride at your own risk" at this time as all ITS trails need all the attention they can get.
Drivers need to be very aware that with temps going into the 40's over the next several days that water holes will open up at any time. As usual, our 4 legged buddies will be using ALL trails over the next several days.
Hey, just got off the phone with Rick Long from our sister club Molunkus Valley(Sherman) and he tells me that they have groomed tonight and that water holes are starting to open up so be very careful out there. ITS83N. and club trail#3 are very passable at this time -- just pay attention!!!
Ride safe and to the faaar right,
Jim Splan,
Reporter@ Large
P.S -- Hey John -- isn't doing the racing news easier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????
P.SS -- Please,Please, be careful of snowsnakes at this time. Their is one on ITS #81 named " PEADRO" that has eaten a fully loaded 18 wheeler!! I"M NOT LIEING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
02/16/2010
Hey Gang,
Not going to lie to you all one bit --- we need a MAJOR snowstorm to save the rest of this season. Most of our ITS trail system, especially ITS# 83 - Sherman/Whetstone Falls has real snow issues at this time. In speaking with the operators who manage this trail I am told that we will wait for the snowstorm on Tuesday to get this trail back online. Sorry for any inconvience but we do not have enough snow to work with at this time. As usual the "roads" are fine, but the wooded areas are where the real issues start. It has been determined that we will wait for snow rather than weld drags for several days. With HOPEFULLY 6" of snow Tues/Wed my report is as follows::::
ITS# 83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- Will be groomed as soon as we get enough snow to make a difference! I am told that groomers will go Wed. ASAP! Drivers need to just SLOW DOWN!!
ITS# 81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- Groomed, with fair/good conditions. Be aware of a plowed road approx. 5 miles S of Benedicta Store and continuing for 2.5 miles.
Minicipal Trail #70 -- Bendedicta/Whetstone Falls -- This trail has not been groomed since the rains due to low snow conditions. There is a 3 mile Winter Road in place just after the Mud Brook bridge W. of route # 11 with no snow cover at this time. Will get it in place as soon as conditions permit!!!
Snowgang club trails are groomed with good conditions at this time.
SPECIAL NOTE::: With school vacation here, all drivers need to be aware that new and less expirienced drivers all be on ALL trails. Protect them -- SLOW DOWN -- PAY ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jim Splan,
Reporter@ Large
P.S. -- Deer.Moose, and Turkeys (4 Legged) using all trails at this time!!
02/12/2010
Hey Gang,
Looking into the upcoming weekend, temps. are going to be above average which will make for great riding and a challenge for the Snowgang groomer operators with limited snow to work with. With school vaca. here sled traffic will be at peak, so all drivers need to slow down and pay close attention as there will be younger and new riders on all trails. With that being said my trail report is as follows::
(1) ITS# 83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls --- Groomed -- with good/excellent conditions.
(2) ITS#81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- Groomed with excellent conditions. Be aware of a plowed road approx. 5 miles S. of Benedicta store. Please follow all signs closely.
(3) Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- Still no grooming being done of this trail, as there is a 3 mile Winter road in place starting at Mud Brook on the West side of route#11. Flurries over the last couple of days MAY allow sleds to get enough lube to go. Will update as soon as I get updates on this trail.
(4) ** All club trails are groomed at this time, with good/excellent conditions.
Ride safe and to the faaar right,

P.S--- 4 legged creatures using ALL trails -- watch for them!!!!!!!!
P.SS -- Could be a "snowsnake weekend" -- get ready!!
02/09/2010
Hey Gang,
Just a quick report, as conditions have not changed a lot in the past couple days. We are now in the "need snow" mode in a few areas. With that in mind my trail report is as follows:::::
(1) ITS# 83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- groomed, with good conditions.
(2) ITS# 81-- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff --- groomed, with excellent conditions.
(3) Municipal Trail #70 -- Bendedicta/Whetstone Falls -- This trail is NOT groomed at this time. We did get a couple inches of new snow last night,it might be just enough to get a sled over the Winter road that starts W. of Mud Brook on the W. side of route #11, and continues for 2.5 - 3.0. miles.
(4) All club trails are groomed with good/excellent conditions at this time.
OVERVIEW::::: All trails have icey conditions in the corners, with a lack of snow in some places. All drivers need to use just plain "common sense" and SLOW DOWN!!! You are almost in Springlike conditions as of right now, with limited snowpack on the ground. All drivers need to stay on marked trails and respect your landowners!! Remember to stay to the faaar right -- the guy you hit could be ME!!
SNOWDANCE PLEASE,
Jim Splan,
Reporter @ Large
P.S -- Happy to report that our TS 110 is back online after a blown engine -- you guys dance and give her something to do!!! THINK SNOW!!
02/05/2010
Hey Gang,
Getting my trail report ready for the upcoming weekend, and with no snow in sight and heavy traffic expected we are running out of the "white gold" as I write. All trails -- except for Municipal Trail #70 have been groomed and very ridable at this time. Conditions are as follows::::
(1) ITS#83 --- Sherman/Whetstone Falls --- Being groomed as I write, conditions will be good/excellent with some icey conditions.
(2) ITS#81 --- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- not one sled track on this trail since the last grooming -- fields are a little sparce but on the roads you can "get er done"!!! Have 2.5 miles of plowed road approx. 5 miles South of Benedicta store. Follow all signs closely!
(3) Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- this trail has not been groomed since the rains for lack of no snow in a couple of areas. I would suggest that riders not use this trail until we get 4-6" of new snow as there is 2-3 miles of bare ground (Winter road) W. of route #11. Trailmasters will update as soon as conditions improve. Ride safe and to the right please!!!!
Jim Splan,
Reporter@ Large
P.S -- Talk to locals before going onto the ice!!
P.SS -- Dave Keys needs to do a "snowdance"!!!!
02/03/2010
Hey Gang,
With temps well below zero at night and only in the teens during daylight hours, wetholes that were a problem a week ago have, for the most part , been fixed and refrozen. All trails have a lot of icey spots and snow is thin in some areas. With this being said my trail report is as follows:::
ITS#83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- groomed with good conditions.
ITS#81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- groomed with good/excellent conditions.Drivers need to be aware of a plowed road approx. 5.5 miles South of the Benedicta Pub and lasting for about 2 miles.
Municipal Trail #70 --- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- This trail has not been groomed since the heavy rains of last week due to lack of snowpack. Trailmasters are monitering this trail closely, but we just new more snow to get over it. The 3 miles of Winter road starting at Mud Brook(past route #11) is bare ground at this time.
Club trails will groomed on 2-3-10. Conditions should be good/excellent on all trails.
Drivers need to be aware of 4 legged animals using all trails at this time. Watch for hoofprints ahead of you and SLOW DOWN!! Remember they were here first -- give them the right of way!!!
SPECIAL NOTE ::: Unbelievable as it sounds there are some lakes & ponds that still have thin ice conditions. Drivers need to check with the "locals" before going on the ice!! As usual, tell someone where you are headed on your ride!!!
Ride safe & to the faaaar right,
Jim Splan,
Reporter @ Large
P.S --SNOWDANCE PLEASE!!
02/01/2010
Hey Gang,
Before I give you my trail report, I will tell you all that we need some SNOW to help us along, so do your snowdances please!! I have spoken with Trailmaster Lance Huntley and former Trailmaster Ken Delano on current conditions and my report is as follows::::
ITS# 83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls ---groomed with good conditions. Ken Delano tells me that overall this trail came out well when he groomed it. There are a couple of waterholes that need attention, but sledders should have no problem getting around them.
ITS# 81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- This trail will be groomed Sunday night. I have looked at this trail firsthand and can tell you that conditions as I write are already good/excellent with light traffic -- it can only get better!
Municipal Trail#70 --Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- Have reports that this trail needs some snow before it is feasible to put a groomer over it.There are two sections of plowed road for sleds to get over, and lubrication may be a problem, as the high winds have blown this trail clean. Trailmasters will give me a better overview as time goes on. Will update ASAP!
All club trails will be groomed as time allows.
**** SPECIAL NOTES -(1) Please SLOW DOWN as all trails have very icey conditions.(2) Give our 4 legged friends the "right of way" -- remember they were here 1st!!!! (3) Get info. from your "locals" on all ice conditions. Remember WET IS DEADLY!!
Ride safe @ to the faaaar right,

Hey Gang,
As I write this report on 1-25-10, I am listening to the sound of HEAVY rain beating on my roof and it has been there for hours. With 1-2" of rain expected, all grooming operations have been suspended at this time. All Snowgang trails will be looked at after this rain event is over to determine which, and how many, WATERHOLES have opened up. I would assume , at this time, that we will be looking at starting from "square one" from a grooming standpoint. A major snow event will have to occur, along with some really cold temps. to get things frozen down again. With all this being said my trail report is as follows::
ALL SNOWGANG TRAILS ARE "RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK" at this time. I have already had one report of a "STOP AHEAD" sign missing at Route 11 on Trail #70. This situation has been addressed and being fixed as I write, but drivers need to realize that with "big wind" conditions" as they are, that signs are going to be blown down or blown away. Our trailmasters will be riding all Snowgang trails ASAP to replace signs that will be missing. Drivers need to use their heads on all trails,as they were gone over before this storm and will be extremely ICEY. Please remember two things:: (1) SLOW DOWN, especially in the corners. (2) Leave a lot of extra trail to get slowed down!! O.K.-- that's it for now. We will be back with a vengeance as soon as we can. Oh, I forgot -- PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR SNOWSNAKES!! THEY EAT SKIDOOS FOR BREAKFAST,AND THEY ARE OF EVERY TRAIL!!!! BEWARE!!!
Jim Splan,
P.S -- STAY OFF THE ICE!!!!!!!!!!
01/21/2010
Hey Gang,
Recieved 4-6" of new "white gold" over the last 24 hrs. With this new snow having a lot of water content we will be able to get all trails set up really nice for the upcoming week. Now we have the extra snow necessary to get our total trail system online for the season. With that being said, my trail report is as follows::::::
(1) Sherman/Whetstone Falls --- Being groomed as I do my report (7:30 p.m. Wed.) We have had all kinds of problems on this trail (water issues) but over the last several days have gotten everything frozen down so that I can say the riding on this trail good/excellent. Drivers need to be aware that there are still several waterholes to get around and that they are cautioned with tape -- PAY ATTENTION!!
(2) Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- This trail will be groomed overnight on Wed the 20th as the machine on ITS#83 will come back to base via this trail. Conditions will be EXCELLENT all the way to Sherman as the 3 miles of Winter road that I spoke of past Mud Brook will be FINALLY snowcovered and groomed. Remember, drivers, you have 3 miles on this trail that you are sharing with LOADED 18 WHEELERS. Stay on you side of the road -- follow signs closely. On the Benedicta end (After the Casey Road) you are dealing with plowed road (with only one vechicle using the road for approx. 2 miles). Not a big deal, a club member who knows the real deal -- just SLOW DOWN -- enjoy the ride!!
(3) ITS# 81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cottoff -- This trail is groomed, and will be groomed again on Thurs. night. Conditions on this trail should be AWESOME all weekend!
(4) All Snowgang club trails will be groomed as time allows.
(5) Have had reports of deer and moose on ALL trails!! Drivers need to slow down and pay attention to the trails edge!! Look for "footprints" in the trail that may let you know that there is a very LARGE animal somewhere up ahead!! I will tell you this -- if you hit ANYTHING in the trail IT WILL RUIN YOUR WHOLE DAY!!!!!!$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!
Lastly -- If you are even thinking about going on any ice, you need to speak with someone "local" who can tell you where the trouble spots are.Remember -- your "shortcut" could be the longest (or shortest) day of your life!! USE YOUR HEAD PLEASE!!!
Ride real safe @ to the faaar right,

Hey Gang,
Well, we missed the big snowmaker today that could have set us up for the rest of the season. With some really heavy traffic over the weekend I was hoping this storm would give us 6-8" to work with but NO, did not happen!! Now we are trying to "manufacture" snow is I write. Our TS 140 is out and pulling in all snow to be found. As of 8:00 p.m. I am informed that Things are going well on ITS#83 With all that being said my report is as follows:::
ITS#83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls --- groomed with good/excellent conditions. Drivers need to be aware of some wetholes that could open up as temps. go up over the next couple of days.
ITS#81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- groomed, with good conditions. This trail will be groomed again on Tues. night and should set up really nice. Will try to get info if the the connection to Medway can happen. Last report was the the trail from Mattawakeag to Medway was being stumped and more snow is needed there.
Municipal Trail #70 --Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- Groomed -- good conditions, with the following:: We now have approx. 2 miles of plowed road starting at the Casey Road bridge going West. Only have one vechicle on this road --- a club member-- who has no problem with sleds on the road. Plenty of lube to be had -- please slow down -- ride safe! Also -- after Mud Brook Bridge (1/2 mile W. of route 11) you will encounter approx. 3 miles of new Winter road. We need a good storm to make this section of trail rideable. This trail has been groomed to the Mud Brook Bridge. Sledders as URGED not to travel this trail until we get some covering snow!! Landowner has agreed to let sleds travel with the big trucks -- PAY ATTENTION!!
All club trails are groomed and will groomed again as time allows.
Ride safe & to the right,
Jim Splan

Hey Gang,
Working hard on getting our #2 tractor/groomer back online (blown engine). Latest report is that this machine could be back online in 7-10 days if things go right. Our ts#140 will cover our system until further notice. With that being said my trail report is as follows::::
ITS# 83 --- Sherman/Whetstone -- FINALLY have the "4 mile mud hole" frozen down so that our groomers can completely groom this trail. Had a cell phone call from Trailmaster Colby McDonald stating that he had been through this section twice and was grooming to Whetstone Falls as of 8:00 p,m. Thursday night. Conditions on this trail will be good/excellent!
ITS # 81 --- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- groomed with good conditions. Be aware of a plowed road approx.5 miles S. of Benedicta and continuing for 2.5 miles. The landowner has provided a "shelved" area so groomer/sleds can share the road. Follow signs closely.00
Municipal Trail#70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- Trail is groomed to Mud Brook (1/2mile past route 11W.) Be aware that there is 3 miles of new Winter road in place. Riders are urged to find an alternate route at this time. Need one good storm to make this trail AWESOME!!
All Snowgang club trails are groomed with good conditions.
**** SPECIAL NOTE:: Lets talk ICE:: If you want to get wet -- go out there!!!! DON"T BE STUPID - STAY ONSHORE!!! NO ICE IS SAFE AT THIS TIME!!!

Hey Gang,
Just to let you all know, our TS#110 groomer motor that we lost last week has been torn down and analized. Happy to report that only one cylinder was lost and we may have it back online in 7-10 days. Parts Have been ordered and will be here asap. The TS#140 will take care of grooming needs over the next several days, as a quiet weather is in place until midweek. With this being said, my trail report is as follows::
(1) ITS# 83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- Our "4 miles of mud" will be groomed during daylight hrs. on Wed. This section is from Sherman Lumber Mill S. to the East Branch Bridge. The rest of this trail is groomed to Whetstone with fair/good conditions.
(2) ITS #81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- Groomed with good conditions. Riders need to be aware of a plowed road approx. 5 miles S. of Benedicta Gen. Store and continuing for approx 2.5 miles to the Cuttoff. The woods operator has "shelved" one side for the groomer and sleds to use -- please follow signs closely -- truck traffic will be light.
(3) Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- groomed, with good conditions to Mud Brook bridge, where approx 3 miles of Winter road has been put in place. We need a good storm to be able to get this section of trail groomed.Sledders are urged to find alternate routes.
(4) All club trails groomed with good conditions.
OVERVIEW::: Should have a route to the County by Wed afternoon.(ITS#83-Whetstone/Sherman). If not in place, sledders can take ITS#83 N. to ITS#85W. towards Patten/Shin Pond and continue on from there.
Remember that NO ice is safe to be on even though we have had some cold temps the last couple of nights. Please check with the locals before going out there!!!

Hey Gang,
Temps. are finally cooling down, so the Snowgang can get our trail system back in shape. We have several issues on all ITS trails in our system and I will address them one at a time. First, and probablly most important, is that we had one of our tractor/groomers go down last week with a blown engine. At our monthly meeting on Tuesday the 5th, our options were discussed and it was determined that this machine could be offline for 3-4 weeks. A lot will depend on the availability of parts. Best case -- it could be back online in 15-20 days. With that being said,my trail report is as follows::::
ITS#83 - Sherman/Whetstone Falls---- This trail is "ride at your own risk" as of this writing. MAJOR water problems starting at the Sherman Lumber Co. Mill and continuing for 4 miles to the East Branch bridge have made it impossible to groom the trail at this time. The Snowgang has already had one groomer stuck and another not be able to breakout the trail due to water. Sleds are urged to do some "offtrail riding" and help freeze this trail down. I would STRONGLY suggest that only expierenced drivers attempt this section of trail. On a better note, drivers can come from the South at Whetstone and take ITS#85W. at the cuttoff and ride towards Bowlin/Shinpond/Patten area.
ITS#81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- This trail was groomed on 1.07.10 and is in pretty good shape as I write. I have been informed we will be "sharing" a plowed road starting roughly 5 miles South of Benedicta and continuing for 2.5 miles. Please follow all signs closely and SLOW DOWN!! Please remember that you can get from Sherman to Medway on this trail as there is a new trail coming from Medway to Mattawamkeag that connects.
Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- This trail was groomed to Mud brook Bridge on 1.07.10 The groomer had to turn around there because a Winter road apprax 3 miles long has been made, we just need some snow to get over it.
OVERVIEW*****
(1) Please remember that although we are into Jan. that most trails have Springlike conditions and that a lot more snow is needed on most trails. Water is not your friend, or ours!! Please use extreme caution on all trails - be on the lookout for stumps, rocks, and all the "crap" that a groomer brings to the surface.
(2) Please,Please -- stay off the lakes and ponds. Ice conditions can change in as little as 25' depending on currents and springs. All of law enforcement has stated :: DON'T GO OUT THERE!!!
(3) Just a reminder:::: Please join the snowmobile club on your choice!! There is safety in numbers-- I have seen it!!!!!
Please ride safe & to the faaar right,

01/03/2010 Hey Gang,
Well, some good news and some bad news to go along with it. First, we have roughly 16-18" of new snow to work with from the weekend storm. The rain event during the last 12 hrs. of the storm should help to make an even better base than what we already had.The bad news is that we had a tractor/groomer go down last week with a blown engine. Right now looking at least two weeks before it is back online.
With only one groomer on our trail system, it could be midweek before everything is broken out and groomed. ITS trails, of course, will be attended to first and club trails will be groomed as time allows. Drivers need to use caution at all times and any and all help breaking out these trails is greatly appreciated.
Only one hazzard to report at this time:::: There is a tree down across the trail on ITS# 83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls . Trailmasters have been alerted, and this situation will be addressed asap.
Please remember that no lakes and ponds are safe to be on at this time. Please check with your local folks before going out there!!
Ride safe & to the right,
Jim Splan,

Hey gang,
With another 6-8" of the "good stuff' last night we should be in good shape, except for one thing -- the WIND!! We have a breeze blowing at times from 30 - 50 mph so there is no sense in trying to send the groomers out at this time. The best case is that the temps. are supposed to get WICKED cold over the next 24-48 hrs. This will help in freezing things up more and give us a better chance of getting some serious grooming done over the weekend. The forecast is for up to 18-24" of snow from Friday into Sunday, so get ready for some serious riding after this event occurs. Please remember that it will take 24-48 hrs. to get this much snow in place and groomed.
The other side of this "coin" is that none of the swamps are frozen, and this blanket of snow will only make it more difficult to freeze down. So get out there and help the Snowgang for everything in place. RIDE ON!!! All Snowgang trails will be groomed as it becomes diligent to do so. With all this being said my report is as follows::::::::::::::::
ITS# 83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- groomed from the S. end to the E. Branch bridge. Snowmobiliers will have to break out approx. 3 miles to Sherman Lumber Co. -- groomed from there to Sherman Irving.Be aware of WATER issues!

Hey Gang,
Well, I quess we are finally going to get things rolling with over a foot of snow forecast for the next couple of days. One groomer was out on Monday on ITS # 83/Sherman-Whetstone. Trailmaster Lance Huntley found out REAL fast that the trails are not frozen as they should be when he got stuck in the swamp behind Sherman Lumber mill. He had to be rescued by a bulldozer/escavator and the tractor is in a heated garage and bing unthawed.
With all that being said I can tell you that all Snowgang trails have been signed and staked and are ready for use.
On a special note, I am happy to report that Municipal Trail # 70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls will be OPEN this season. Forester Paul Swett (Wagner Timberlands) has told me that there will be some logging to the West side of Route 11 past Mud Brook and that we will be allowed to travel with the truck traffic. Traffic signs will be in place shortly -- please pay attention to them and follow them closely.
Also, be aware that there is a new trail going East/North from Medway. This new trail is part of ITS#81N. and will hook up from Medway over towards Mattawamkeag and turn North into the Benedicta/Sherman area.
As of this report, all Snowgang trails will be open, and all snowmobiles are urged to get out there after this latest storm to help freeze things down. I would guess that no grooming will be done until this snow event "settles", which couuld take 36-48 hrs.All trails will be "RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK" at this time. Remember to be aware of objects in the trail and to stay to the far right at all times.
Merry Xmas,

Final Trail report 2009 season
Hey Gang,
First I need to apologize to the snowmobiling community as a whole for not reporting trail conditions for the last 5 days. I have been offline due to circumstances beyond my control. I realize that good reporting is critical this late in the season, and again I am sorry for not being there.
This will be my last report of the season as heavy rains are expected for Sat/Sun. Some wetholes are opening up but experienced riders can still get around on some trails. My best advice would be to trailer to the Shin Pond area and start from there if you want to do any long distance riding.
As far as riding in the Snowgang area, all trails are RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK at this time! Fields are becoming bare and wetholes are opening up in the woods. In short the fat lady is singing her heart out!!
A big "at-a-boy" to the Snowgang groomer operators for doing an outstanding job -- as usual!
Have a great - and safe- Summer!!!!!!!!!

Trail report 3-23-09
Hey Gang,
I am going way out on a limb here, mostly because I am typing on Sunday night and not able to get any word on trails as they exist at this time. I do know that all the motels around the Benedicta/Sherman area were full over the past couple of days. With temps in the 40's all trails would have been riden hard and waterholes should be opening up all over the place. With this being said, and really warm temps coming after Monday I will put all trails as RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I will update,if, and when, we groom again. Watch for objects and animals in the trails as you ride. SLOW DOWN and enjoy the view!!!

Trail Report 3-13-09
Hey Gang,
Colder temps are keeping all Snowgang trails in great shape for the upcoming weekend. Grooming is on a regular schedule and my report is as follows:::
ITS#83 --Sherman/Whetstone Falls-- Being groomed as I type on Thurs. night -- conditions are good to excellent at this time. Some "low snow" conditions exist -- drivers need to SLOW DOWN!!
ITS#81 --Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff --- This trail was groomed midweek and there is not one sledtrack on it. Conditions will be excellent all the way.
Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- THIS TRAIL IS CLOSED FOR THE SEASON DUE TO HEAVY LOGGING!
All Snowgang trails will be groomed Thurs. night setting up excellent conditions for the upcoming weekend.
SPECIAL NOTED:::
(1) Spring riding conditions exist at this time. Waterholes are opening up in different locations daily and the Snowgang has no way to caution all the hazzards that will exist. Drivers need to be aware that conditions will be changing on an hourly basis. Remember that the trail your rode in on my look totally different on the return trip.
(2) Lots of slush on all lakes and ponds at this time. As temps. warm back up, conditions will only get worse. My "best advice" is to stay off ALL bodies of water! At the very least, please check with "locals" before going out there!
(3) Deer, moose, turkeys, using ALL trails to get from A-B. Remember, it is illegal is chase or harrass these animals in any way!! Give them the right of way -- they were here first.
Ride safe & to the FAR right,
Jim Splan,
P.S -- SNOWSAKES on all trails.Don't say I didn't warn ya!!!!!!!
Trail report 3-11-09
Hey Gang,
All sledders need a big wakeup call for the rest of the remaining snowmobile season --SLOW DOWN & ENJOY THE VIEW!! This is the time of year when a trail can change from hour to hour. We have a lot of waterholes starting to open up and drivers need to be very aware of that. There is no way a snowmobile club can caution every place where the unexpected can happen. Drivers need to be on the lookout for objects in the trail ( rocks, stumps, ect.) and drive accordingly! Also, be VERY aware that deer, moose, and even turkeys are using ALL trails to get around. Remember, it is against the law to in any way disturb or chase these animals. With this being said, my report is as follows::::
ITS#83 --Sherman/Whetstone Falls-- groomed, with good/fair conditions in some areas, due to low snow conditions and heavy traffic.Leave yourself extra time on this one.
ITS#81--Sherman/Benedicta/Mattwamkeag Cuttoff-- groomed, with excellent conditions all the way!
Municipal Trail #70 --CLOSED DUE TO HEAVY LOGGING!!
All Snowgang club trails are groomed at this time with excellent conditions!
Remember to ride very safe and to the right!!!

Another wild storm on Monday with high winds and 6+" of new snow to deal with. Have several reports of blowing and drifting snow making it hard to get around. With all this in mind, my trail report is as follows:::
ITS#83 --- Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- groomed with excellent conditions. Be aware that drifts may be in place on the Sherman end, where fields are prevalent!!
ITS#81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- Probabally will be groomed after the storm early A.M. Tues. morning. Be aware of icing conditions around Qualey Brook, just after crossing Casey Road!

(2) Riding "offtrail" could be a very bad mistake!! If you sink your sled "out of sight", it may be there for a while!!!
(3) Chech with "locals" before going on lakes and ponds There is a lot of slush out there!
Waiting fot my bailout,

Jim Splan,
Hey Gang,
With a Nor'easter coming in Suday night into Monday with the potential for 18-24" of new snow, the Snowgang will wait for this event to happen and then get on top of it was soon as conditions allow. Drivers need to stay on marked trails at all times now, because if you venture off somewhere that you shouldn't be and have problems we may not be able to find you because of deep snow conditions. With that being said my report is as follows::
ITS # 81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff --- groomed, with excellent conditions. This trail goes right by my house and I could hear sleds on it all day!!

(1) Please remember that under this snow that is coming that ICEY conditions exist due to moderating temps. Drivers need to slow down, expecially in the corners.
(2) All 4 legged creatures will be using ALL trails to get from A-B. Remember that it is illegal to chase, or in any way disturb deer & moose and is punishable with a HUGE fine.
(3) Speaking of huge fines-- try driving LEFT OF CENTER and see what you come up with if you get caught!!! Your fine will pay for dinner for 4 at Bugaboo Creek!!!!!!!!
Drive safe & to the right,

Hey Gang,
With school vacation week in full gear, snowmobile traffic is extremely heavy on all trails at this time. Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- THIS TRAIL IS CLOSED DUE TO HEAVY LOGGING!! I will update if, and when, this trail becomes available for use.
All Snowgang trails are groomed with excellent conditions at this time.

Trail report 1-30-09
Hey Gang,
Can you Say "WHITE GOLD!!!" Depending on who you talk to, the Snowgang trail system got between 12-18" of new snow on Wed. night. This will leave the door open for some great riding over the next several days after this storm gets knocked down and groomed. At this time one Snowgang groomer (ts140 -- the big one) is down with tire issues. I am told by Trailmaster Phil Knowles that this groomer will be back in service by midday on Fri.
With all this being said my trail report is as follows:::::::::
ITS# 83 --- Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- Groomed with good/excellent conditions. BE AWARE OF A BEAVER HOUSE IN THE TRAIL APPROX 1/2 MILE SOUTH OF THE SHERMAN LUMBER CO. MILL.CAUTIONS ARE IN PLACE-- SLOW DOWN !!
ITS#81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- Will be groomed on Fri A.M -- watch for the TS -140 grooming daytime!!
Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- THIS TRAIL IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO LOGGING!! I will give an update when this trail reopens.
***** All snowgang club trails will be groomed on Friday if both groomers are in service. If only one groomer is running, club trails will be groomed as time allows.
***** Some ice is still not safe, please check with "locals" before venturing out there!!!
***** Remember that as the snow gets deeper, the more our 4 legged friends (deer, moose,) are using our trails to get around. I have pics. of what hitting even a 30# turkey at 40mph. can do to a snowmobile!!
Bottom line, there still is a lot of ice on all trails, so sledders need to SLOW DOWN especially in corners, and ride to the right. I have heard that wardens are writing tickets for driving LEFT OF CENTER! If you have an extra C note in your wallet -- they will take It!!!!!
***** As a special note -- PLEASE SUPPORT THE PRESQUE ISLE SNOWMOBILE CLUB -- THEY LOST THERE CLUBHOUSE TO FIRE LAST WEEK!!

Trail Report 1-05-09
Hey Gang,
Still waiting for another major storm before the Snowgang gets into high gear as far as grooming goes. One machine has been out and my trail report is as follows:::::
ITS# 83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls --- GROOMED with fair to poor conditions due to wetholes and running water.
Please believe me when I tell you this next one ::: BE AWARE OF A BEAVER HOUSE INTHE MIDDLE OF THE TRAIL APPROX. 1/2 MILE SOUTH OF SHERMAN LUMBER MILL!!! This obstruction will be cautioned asap, the groomer had to go "offtrail" to get around it! This house is over 7' high with an active beaver population. The club will have to get legal advise to determine if this obstruction can be removed!! I HATE BEAVERS!!!!
ITS# 81 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- GROOMED as far as Benedicta village. We have "low snow" conditions from town to Mattawamkeag Cuttoff and will wait for more snow before going there.
Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- THIS TRAIL IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!!
We have 2 logging operations in place on this trail, forcing it's closure. I will update as soon as logging is done.
All Snowgang club trails are open for riding at this time with no grooming being done on them.
OVERVIEW:::: Trails that are groomed are good on the roads and fields, poor in the woods & swamps. Sledders can get from point a-b, just remember to use caution and lower your speed. As a reminder, we still have thin ice conditions on all lakes, ponds & streams. Please check with the "locals" before going on any ice!!

Snowgang trail report 12/29/08
Hey Gang,
With almost record warm temps. on Sunday all plans to start grooming are back on hold. Trailmaster Phil Knowles has talked with neighboring clubs and they have all stated that we need another sugnificant storm to get grooming underway. Many areas( woods) will need another 12-18" to get things started.
With that being said, my trail report is as follows:: All Snowgang trails are "ride at your own risk" at this time. Any water holes that were frozen have opened up again and will be a special hazzard. Any riders that venture out at this point should consider ALL trails as"Spring riding."
Also remember that NO ice is safe at this time. Avoid all lakes, ponds, and streams. If you do go out make sure you take a buddy with you, and let someone know your destination.
Ride safe & to the right,

Snowgang trail report 12-23
Hey Gang,
Whoever did the "snowdance" --- enough already!! The Benedicta/Sherman area got 26-30" of snow out of this last storm. The only problem this reporter can see with this "big blast" is that the snow was so dry that sleds will sink to the bottom of it. Also, any wetholes that had not frozen down will be insulated and hard to freeze down now.
Our saving grace is a real "mixed bag" of heavy wet stuff coming on Wed. the 24th. his storm, although not real big, should take the air out of the 30" storm and make the snows usable.
According to Trailmaster Phil Knowles, sleds are urged to get on the trails to take some of the air out of it. Remember one thing -- it will be just like "offtrail" riding, so this reporter suggests that only seasoned riders go out there. With all this being said, my trail report is as follows:
ITS#83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- ride at your own risk. This trail has been cleared of brush and blowdowns, but that was over a week ago. Blizzard force winds could have changed all of that by now.
ITS #81 -- Sherman/ Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- ride at your own risk. This trail, as far as I can report, is clear of any obstructions.
Municipal Trail #70 -- Benedicta/Whetstone -- CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!!! Have 2 huge logging operations in place -- one on each end of this trail. Will let sledders know when, and if, this trail will be available for use.
All Snowgang club trails are open at this time -- ride at your own risk.
In closing, please remember to carry the following: spare plugs, (do you know where your plug wrench is?), spare belt, tow rope, emerency kit(matches, flashlight, ect),and a first aid kit. Carry a cell phone and gps if possible. Make sure you tell someone where you are traveling to--They may have to come get you!
ALSO REMEMBER THAT NO ICE IS SAFE AT THIS TIME. STAY OFF IT !!!!

Snowgang trail report 12-21-08
Hey Gang,
Waiting for the nor'easter to hit on Sunday, that from all reports will dump 12-24" of the "white gold" on us before it is all said and done. All Snowgang trails are signed and ready except for areas only accesable by snowmobile. ITS # 83 has been cleared of blowdowns and is ready to be used. Municipal Trail #70 Benedicta/Whetstone Falls is CLOSED due to logging on both ends of it. I will update you if &when this trail becomes available for use. All club trails are ready for use at this time.
All Snowgang trails will be "ride at your own risk" until further notice.Sledders are urged to get on the trails after this blizzard subsides to take the air out of the snow and pack it down. Be aware that waterholes will still exist, and will be hard to freeze down with this amount of snow on them. I have been informed by Trailmaster Phil Knowles that no grooming will start probably until after Xmas if conditions warrant.
To all sledders -- make sure you have the following with you at all times :: extra plugs (and plug wrench), emergency kit ( matches ect.) tow rope, and a cell phone and or GPS if possible. Do not ride alone -- AVERY BAD HABIT!!! Also, let someone know the route you will be taking -- you just never know what may happen on the trails.
Lastly, please check ice conditions with locals before going on ANY ice. The warden service has already issued BAD ICE warnings -- please check them!!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS - RIDE SAFE & TO THE RIGHT!!

April 1, 2008 Trail Report |

Hey Gang,
Well, due to a continous day of fog and rain on Tuesday and the report of 50 mph. winds on Wednesday the decision has been made to put the Snowgang groomers in their respective garages and try it again next Winter. Looking back of the past season, it really was amazing wasn't it. From record snowfall to record fuel prices, the Snowgang continued to persivere under really extreme conditions. Our groomer operators put on well over 500 hrs. total grooming time, and if they were payed in real money instead of giving FREELY of their time we would be bankrupt. If you want to give them an "at-a-boy", feel free to tell them in our clubpage guest book @ www.benedictasnowgang.com .
A special "thank'-you" to all the landowners involved with the Snowgang effort. Without these folks, both corporate and municipal, we would be sitting in front of the boob-tube with nowhere to ride!!!
Just so all snowmobiliers know--- there is still some very ridable trails in our area. Please feel free to ride, at your own risk, on all of the Snowgang trail system. Please be aware that reduced speeds need to be the norm and that there are a lot of deer & moose using all trails. As a footnote, this reporter strongly suggests that machine operators stay clear of all bodies of water. Ice conditions are changing on a daily basis. If you do get the urge to go on the ice, please check with locals on current conditions.
I will make myself available to report conditions for the next several days in the event that a n'oreaster or some other odd event occurs. Ride safe & to the faaaar right.

Hey Gang,
All Snowgang trails continue to be good/excellent at this time.Club President John Duffy reports that he has ridden our trail system today, and conditions are holding well, as there are no waterholes at this time. All trails are being used by deer & moose to get from a-b. Have had major traffic on our ITS system this weekend with little or no damage. Next chance of grooming maybe mid week if our upcoming rain event on Tues. is not too intense. The only trails that will be groomed in the future will be ITS trails. Looking to get one more good ride-in the week of 4-1-08 for diehard riders. Right now we have between 2-3' of base depending where you are on our trails. All bridges have 1-2' of base on them, so riders have to be careful, as this a very high amount.
Lets talk about riding on lakes and streams for a minute. Riders need to be aware that "slush" conditions can occur on bodies of water overnight. If you get your machine stuck in this stuff, you are going to have to get a lot of buddies to get it out!! Your best bet is to ask the locals for conditions before venturing out there. The rule of thumb --IF YOU DON'T KNOW -- DON'T GO!! As for riding rivers and streams -- if you do this you are just STUPID!
It looks a little like the "fat lady is starting to hum a little -- lets see how far we can push her before she sings. The saving grace here is that nights are supposed to stay cold over the next several days -- hence a ittle more riding!!
NOTE:: Chasing ANY animal of a snowmobile trail is a crime, let alone a sin, just DON"T DO IT!!

Hey Gang,
Snowgang club President John Duffy tells me that he has ridden the Snowgang trail system and reports that temps. have stayed cold enough so that no major water holes have opened up at this point in time . Snowgang trails are being groomed on a "selective " basis as fuel has gone well over $4.00/gallon and the club pocketbook is getting somewhat thin.. Most grooming from this point on will be geared to high traffic areas. Having stated that, my trail report is as follows:::::
ITS# 81/70/83S. --- Sherman/Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- groomed with excellent conditions.
ITS# 81N ----- Sherman/ Sherman Station --- groomed with good/excellent conditions.(Deer yard1mile n.of Irving)
ITS#81S. Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- groomed with good/excellent conditions.
NOTES::(1) Be aware that deer and moose are using ALL trails to get from a-b.(2) We are in Spring riding conditions, so operators need to SLOW DOWN and watch for animals and waterholes that can open up at any time. Ever seen what hitting a deer can do to a snowmobile --- major damage$$$$! Be very aware that snowsnakes will be raising their ugly heads really soon. Their favorite snack --SKIDOOS!!! (the yellow one!) (3) All Snowgang trails have been recently groomed and are in great shape at this time. (4) Lakes and ponds will become slushy in the coming days as temps. warm. Check with "locals" on going out there!

Hey Gang,
O.K. -- The first day of Spring, and we are dealing with a MAJOR mess on our hands. Thursday was a mixed bag all day, with no damaging rain to speak of. I am typing on Thursday evening (9ish) and this has turned to snow again. Only 1-2" expected tonight, but the wind is supposed to come up with gusts up to 30mph. This will cause major drifting on all trails, so the decision of when to groom is up in the air at this time.My best guess is that both groomers will be out there Friday night after this storm subsides. In looking at the long range forecast, temps are supposed to stay cold over the weekend which will allow our groomers to set the trails up for at least another week of great riding.
Sorry to sound like a broken record, but please be very aware of animals (large and small) are using ALL trails to get around. Remember one thing -- it is ILLEGAL to in any way to chase, harrass, or in any way disturb these animals. I am hearing reports of moose getting really pi--ed off for being chased up and down the trails. I personally have seen what a really mad moose can do to a snowmobile --IT IS NOT PRETTY!!!!!! Best case is the other same old rule --SLOW DOWN! Although there is tons of snow, we are into Spring riding. Trail conditions can change in minutes this time of year and operators need to be very aware of that fact. Having said all this my report is as follows:::
All Snowgang trails are very ridable at this time. Grooming will be done ASAP!! All operators are urged to ride our trails and help our trails back to the best in the County.
NOTE:: Due to record snow, be very aware at all road crossings. With snowbanks as high as they are now your machine may not be visible to road traffic! Look both ways at least TWICE!!!!

Katahdin Area Trails
Like a broken record I am hear to report once again that conditions are excellent, (with one notable exception), and we are about to receive more snow! The exception is, the 3 miles of trail known as the Dolby trail connecter between Millinocket and East Millinocket, which is in rough shape with lots of issues with running water. The Stratton Trail represents a great alternative and is in beautiful shape. We will likely not groom the Dolby trail again this year and users should ride with real caution on an at your own risk basis! Beyond that bit of spring like news, the rest of the system was groomed Monday night and will be groomed again Thursday and for the weekend. We have exceptional Easter Weekend specials and still offer mid winter top notch riding. The forecast for the weekend is for cold nights and temps around 30 during the day. Don't miss it! We plan to groom into April.

Hey Gang,
With warmer weather in the forecast for the rest of the week conditions will begin to go down hill a bit. At this time all Snowgang trails are holding up well, with no waterholes opening up at this time. With that being said, my trail report is as follows::::
ITS#81n. --- Sherman/Sherman Station --- groomed, with good/excellent conditions -- be aware of deer yarded up in the cedar swamp approx. 1 mile N. of Sherman Irving.
ITS# 81/83-- Sherman/Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- groomed with excellent conditions. A lot of moose and deer using this trail. Slow down, especially at night! Good rule of thumb -- don't overdrive your headlight!
ITS#81 -- Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- Groomed, with good/excellent conditions!! Moose and deer using this trail also!
NOTES:::(1) All Snowgang trails will be groomed as time allows. Club member Jerry Sellers reports that there are "major" deer on the McAvoy Trail at this time!! Also be aware of a flock of turkeys (real live foul) making this trail their home also.
(2) DO NOT RIDE OFFTRAIL! I know it looks great -like you could go anywhere- but I got a couble pics. from club member Tim Caldwell today of one that went "deep" and it looked like it needed a crane to get it out it was so far down!
(3) IT IS ILLEGAL TO, IN ANY WAY,HARRASS,CHASE, OR DISTURB ANY ANIMAIL ON ANY SNOWMOBILE TRAIL. Leave any and all animals on the trails alone. Remember-- they were here first!!!!!!!!!!!
As always, ride safe and to the right. Remember its icey under there!!

Hey Gang,
What a wild weekend weatherwise! I have no idea of rainfall totals, but this was a MAJOR rain event!! I have been out looking at some of the Snowgang trail system today and can report that water is running everywhere. In speaking to club president John Duffy, and V.P. Phil knowles, I am told that all trails will be assested today for damage and the decision will be made when we will groom again. I am sure that no grooming will take place on Sunday night-- Monday night would be a better bet. All Snowgang trails are still very ridable at this time, with Spring riding conditions in effect. My report is as follows:::
ITS#81 -- Sherman/Sherman Station --- ridable, watch out for deer in the swamp one mile N. of the Irving station.
ITS#81/70/83 --Sherman/Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- ridable, with moose and deer using this trail to get around -- use caution at all times as animals will not go offtrail due to deep snow.
ITS#81 -- Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- ridable, moose using this trail to get around.
NOTES::: (1) Major waterholes will be opening up on all trails. These holes will be a major hazzard as the snow base is 2-3' deep, resulting in holes of that depth. Snowmobiers are WARNED to be on the lookout for these hazzards --SLOW DOWN and pay attention. (2) As I have said, animals are using all trails to get around because of snow depths that, in some cases, are over their heads. Remember that it is illegal to chase or in any way harrass these animals. You will get a ticket if you get caught! (3) Spring riding conditions are in effect as of this time, so sled accordingly! The biggest rule is SLOW DOWN! We still have a lot of good riding left - enjoy it!

Hey Gang,
A really tough weekend on the trails all over the State. As most of you know there were four fatalities over the weekend. To all the families involved, sincere condolences from all Snowgang members. As your reporter, I would ask that all sledders stop and think about a couple of things. First, all trails in the State are premo at this time. Trails as very "fast" everywhere. Please remember that there is ice under your ride, and control is of the upmost at this time. You may have to slow down to stay in control of your machine. Second, snow banks are extremely high everywhere, and visibility is going to be a problem -- expecially at intersections and stop signs. Please take extra time at these places to be sure that you are going to be safe. Third, with all the snow that we have some signs have actually been buried out of sight. If, as a sledder, you happen to see the top of a stake or sign please take a minute and dig it out. You might just save the life of the sledder coming behind you! Fourth, waterholes are starting to open up.For those who do not know, waterholes are the erosion of snow from the bottom of the base to the top. This means that waterholes can open up at any time. Again, the rule is slow down! With a base of 2-3', you could get into a reallly biggg hole and have one Heck of a time getting out!!! Having pled my case my trail report is a follows::
ITS # 81 -- Sherman/Sherman Station -- groomed with good/excellent conditions. Be aware of deer yarded up in the cedar swamp approx. 1 mile N. of the Irving station.
ITS # 81/70/83 -- Sherman/Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- groomed with excellent conditions. Moose and deer travelling this trail daily. Slow down and look for tracks in the trail.
ITS # 81 -- Benedicta/ Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- Groomed with excellent conditions! Moose and deer also travelling this trail.
SPECIAL NOTE::: Do not ride "offtrail"! Powder depths are 4-6' depending on where you are! You will be stuck in a heartbeat!

Hey Gang,
The "white gold" has hit again, and the Snowgang is on it's regular grooming schedule. This new snow has created new lube for the slides, the only drawback is that there is a lot of slippery stuff under this new snow! All operators should be aware of icey corners on all trails. With the new 5-7" of new snow my report is as follows:::
All Snowgang trails are in "Powder Riding" mode At this time. All Snowgang trails will be groomed on Thurs. after everything settles back down again. Operators are urged to ride all trails to help repack them! My only concern would be, as I have already said, please be very aware of the underlying ice condition!! Please slow down, especially in the corners and ride to the faaar right!
Also, please be very aware of 4 legged creatures using ALL trails as the snow gets deeper and deeper for them! These deer, moose, ect. know how deep the snow is and they are NOT going into it easily. Also remember this::: IT IS ILLEGAL TO IN ANY WAY DISTURB,CHASE OR HARRASS THESE ANIMALS!!!
All operators need to stay on the MARKED TRAIL! If you get off your PACKED surface, you will be in 4' to 5' of powder.
In closing, remember that there is no gas in Benedicta. Closest gas in in Sherman, 10 miles away. Kelly Shell is pumping 24/7 with full restaraunt services. Irving not pumping fuel from 11p.m./5 a.m. -- no restaurant!

Hey Gang,
The rain on Monday only helped to make the Snowgang trail system even stronger. All ITS trails will be groomed on Tues. night and will set up like CEMENT!! To all operators -- do not fall off your machine!! It will be like skidding down I95 -- that is how hard it is setting up! That being said, my report is as follows:::
ITS # 81/70/83 --- Sherman/Benedicta/Whetstone Falls -- Groomed with the best conditions of the season! Be aware that groomer operator John Duffy encountered a moose on this trail Sat. night that would not move out of the groomers way for over 6 MILES!!! These animals know how deep to snow is (over 5') and are not willing to jump off the trail.(The only way John got around him was they came to route 11 (pavement) and the moose slowed so the groomer got passed him on the pavement!!
ITS # 81 -- Sherman/Sherman Station -- groomed, with excellent conditions. Be aware of deer in the cedar swamp after you leave the Irving station.
ITS# 81 -- Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- groomed with awesome conditions! Hang on for a great ride!!
All Snowgang club trails will be groomed on Wed. Be aware of a flock of turkeys that have adopted the McAvoy Trail as their new home!
OVERVIEW:: As I have stated, be very aware of moose, deer, and turkeys (the flying kind) on all trails at this time. With snow depths over 5' they don't want to leave the groomed surface once they find it. Please remember that it is AGAINST THE LAW to harrass these animals in any way!! If caught, you will recieve a ticket.
In closing, let me remind operators that, after the rain event, all trails - especially corners, will be very icey, use extra caution and stay to the faaar right. Have a great ride!!!

Hey Gang,
With rain and high winds on tap for Monday the only grooming on Sunday night will take place from Sherman/Sherman Station where we meet up with sister club Patten. All other trails are holding well after a weekend of real heavy traffic. Our temp. as I write is 32 degrees!!
I would suggest to all snowmobiliers that you take Monday off, go fishing, shopping or just sleep in -- just stay off all trails, as being on them would only beat them down, saying nothing of you just getting soaked to the bone from 1/3 to 1/2" of rain and fog.
Also, please be aware that ice from our last little burst of energy has left a lot of trees down in all trails. With any luck, Monday's warmer temps. will allow them to go back up on their own. If not their will have to be a lot of trimming done to get grooming equipment from A-Z!
OVERVIEW:: All Snowgang trails are very rideable at this time. Please be aware of the following::: All trails will become very icey over the next 36 hrs. If you do go out, SLOW DOWN!! You have no idea what is around the next corner. If you are travelling 60-70 mph and a tree is in the trail WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO GO??????? Best case -- put her in the woods and hope for the best. Worst case -- lifeflight to EMMC!! USE YOUR HEAD!!!
Remember that it is school vacation and traffic will be very heavy at all times during the week. This also means that sledders could meet groomers at ANY TIME day or night, as they will be trying to keep up with vacation traffic.
As always, ride safe and to the faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar right.
Jim Splan,
P.S -- Our 4 legged friends are EVERYWHERE --slow down!! |

Hey Gang,
With another 8" of "white gold" on Sunday, all Snowgang trails are PREMO at this time. Both groomers are on their regular schedules at this time. Having said that, my trail report is as follows::::
ITS# 81N. Sherman/Sherman Station --- groomed with excellent conditions!! Lots of deer in this area- Slow down!
ITS# 81/70/83/ Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- groomed with excellent conditions.By the looks of the tracks, their are a lot of MOOSE on this 20 miles of trail -- SLOW DOWN!!
ITS#81 -- Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cuttoff --- our best kept secret!! Groomed with AWESOME conditions.Just as flat as a floor!! Again, animals using this trail also -- a great hookup with our sister club Mattawamkeag!
All Snowgang trails are being broken out as I write and conditions will be EXCELLENT!
OVERVIEW :::(1) -- Operators need to remember to SLOW DOWN !! There are deer, moose, and even turkeys (the ones with wings) on all trails and you cannot disturb these animals in any way. If you harrass or chase them, I assure you,you will get a ticket!!! If you hit one -- IT WILL RUIN YOUR WHOLE DAY!
(2) All Snowgang trails are very fast at this time! Corners, if not already, will become icey -- be aware of thst fact. OPERATORS are urged to stay to the far right at all times.
(3) All OPERATORS are urged to check with the "locals" before going onto the ice.Conditions change every day -- please be very aware of that. My best saying,"If you don't know - don't go!" You can always do it another day.
(4) There is no gas in Benedicta. Closest gas is in Sherman -10 miles away, Kelly Shell is open 24/7 with restruant services. Sherman Irving not pumping fuel from 11p.m./5a.m.

Hey Gang,
Have been lucky to get 3-5" of new "white gold" to keep the Snowgang on track as far as grooming goes. All Snowgang trails are groomed at this time.Next grooming will be done on Thur. night with both groomers out as long as it takes to set up trails for the upcoming weekend. The energy of this last little snowmaker, with the moisture involved, has set us up for some "super sledding"!! With that in mind, the trail report is as follows:::::
ITS # 81-70-83 -- Sherman/Whetstone Falls -- groomed, with good to excellent conditions, getting a little sparce in the woods due to extreme traffic.
ITS# 81 -- Benedicta/ Mattawamkeag Cuttoff -- groomed, with excellent conditions.
ITS# 81 -- Sherman/ Sherman Station -- groomed with good,excellent conditions.
All Snowgang trails groomed with good, excellent conditions at this time
SPECIAL NOTES:::(1) Access to ITS#85n. is approx. 1.5 miles N. on ITS # 83/70/81. Should be marked as #85N., take a hard left on to the trail marked Lunksoos Camps.
(2) -- There are deer, moose, and turkeys (both kinds) using all trails at this time to get from a-b.Please slow down and be aware. Also, if you bother these animals in any way, you WILL be ticketed and pay a fine! (As if your fuel didn't cost you enough!)
(3) We have lost a couple of drivers to thin ice,PLEASE,PLEASE, check with locals for current ice conditions before going out there!!! Good rule of thumb,"IF YOU DON'T KNOW-- DON'T GO!! Just remember, you can always do it another day!!!!!!!!!! As always, ride safe and to the far right- the life you save could be mine!!
